On behalf of Wilmington University President Dr. Jack Varsalona, Dr. LaVerne Harmon, University Vice President, presented five distinguished men and women with the prestigious Professor Emeritus Award at the New Castle campus in November, 2014.

The new honorees received their awards at a ceremony in the Doberstein Admissions Center Auditorium before a standing-room-only audience.

The award recipients are:

The rank of Professor Emeritus may be assigned to associate professors who have limited or terminated their responsibilities as a faculty member due to retirement or illness after 15 or more years of distinguished service to the University. The honorees are appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the Chief Academic Officer in consultation with the appropriate Dean. Final approval is then conferred by the Board of Trustees.

“This is a major milestone both for the University and these distinguished educators," said Dr. Harmon. "That they can achieve and receive this rank illustrates the growth and maturity of our University."

“This award speaks to the importance of fulfilling Wilmington University’s mission,” said Dr. Ronald Watts. "The University is committed to excellence in teaching, relevancy of the curriculum and individual attention to its students. It accentuates and reinforces that mission for those of us who have sacrificed toward that goal.”

Dr. Gallagher agreed, saying, “The rank of Professor Emeritus is like a stamp of approval from Wilmington University in recognition of my contributions. I enjoyed my time at the University. I believe I grew as a nurse educator and leader as the University grew. I really appreciate the recognition of this rank and look forward to the opportunity to continue contributing, in some small way, to the continued advancement of this institution.”
