The University of Sydney will this year open its doors to more than 10,300 new undergraduate students. This includes 6960 offers made at 6pm yesterday evening and 3380 offers made in earlier rounds.

The University has continued to see strong demand for top tier courses in law, business and medicine. An ATAR of 99.50 guaranteed students entry into combined law for the first time this year, contributing to the continued popularity of Sydney's leading law school, ranked 13th in the world in the QS World University Rankings.

Arts and engineering courses also continue to be a very popular choice.

The University of Sydney received the highest number of first preferences and overall preferences among applicants in NSW once again this year, a trend that has been continuing for more than a decade.

For those students who missed out on their first preference, this isn't the end of the road, says head of undergraduate student recruitment Kaveh Ghezel.

"Bright, hardworking students will always have a place at the University of Sydney," Ghezel said.

"This is the first stop in the university application process, but there are a number of pathways available to your dream degree.

"For example, you could enrol in one course and transfer to another after a year, or do a generalist degree and enrol in a specialised postgraduate course once you have a better idea of what you want to do. There are also limited vacancies available in some courses for the next round of offers.

"Up to 30 per cent of our students entered their degree by transferring from another course," Ghezel said.

The University of Sydney's future students helpline, 1800 SYD UNI, will extend its hours to coincide with main round offers, and will open from 9am until 9pm this Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 January, from 9am until 7pm on Friday, and from 10am until 3pm on Saturday.
