"Only once one has known real sadness can one feel true happiness."

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

I believe that true happiness can only be felt when one has experienced real sadness in his life because happinesss and sadness are two extreme emotions that oppose each other, hence only when one has seen the worst can one appreciate the best. This can be clearly understood through the examples of someone achieving a gold medal after seeing failure, a city experiencing heavy rainfall that has water scarcity all through the year and Thomas Edison's achievement of spark.

Let us consider the invention of bulb by Thomas Edison, during the process of inventing a bulb, Edison had to face failure and criticism many number of times and was even told that his attempts are futile but when he accomplished a spark through his persisting efforts, the happiness he felt was immeasurable.

Another and more clear example is of residents of India where there is acute water scarcity during the summer time of the year and the most affected is the middle class people. The happiness they felt when the weather reports in television stated that the monsoon is nearing and is liable to relieve the country from its water problems, cannot be determined.

Also the ecstasy felt by student who achieved a gold medal and distinction in a subject in which he had seen failure during the internal assessment was out of bounds as it was his undying efforts towards improving his subject that paid him off.

Hence, from the above examples it is quite clear that be it the happiness felt by Edison, the residents of India or the happiness of a student achieving a gold medal in a subject, was the most only after each had known the contrast, that is the sadness. Therefore, it is true that only after one has known real sadness can one feel true happiness. But it is also true that someone who can appreciate things around him will he be able to appreciate the happiness or sadness in his life.
