Claim: the best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its role models.
Reason: heroes and role models reveal a society’s highest ideals.

Does the character of heroes or the role models that a society chooses reflect that of the whole society because of their representation of the social highest ideal? Surely, the characteristics of the heroes and role models, as the social paradigm, manifest some of the character of a society, but not its complete picture. To understand the character of a society, we should examine more aspects of a society in a dynamic way.

It is no doubt that these heroes or the role models are equipped with some kinds of the traits that a society highly praises and greatly treasures. Such individual qualities as kindness, selflessness, industriousness, persistence, optimism are advocated by a society. Leifeng, a typical good model, has been encouraging people to help others with pleasure, who in his life always assisted people until a dedication of his young life to saving a child, and Leifeng Day, 5th May, is a commemorative day to encourage people to do good for the society. And some of soldiers and firemen who sacrificed themselves for protecting people's life and property from damage and keeping the country peaceful, are always admired for their dedication, courage, responsibility, loyalty. Most importantly, in modern days, a particular kind of entrepreneurship is prized----that is innovation, risk-taking, engagement with which an entrepreneur needs to be equipped in modern society. For example, Bill Gates, who launched the first retail version of Microsoft Windows, and Tim Berners-Lee, who created the World Wide Web, have fundamentally changed the ways of people's communications and official business, and will continually produce a significant effect on the existence mode of human beings. Another example is Jack Ma, who found Alibaba, the first ecommerce company in China, has subverted the means of traditional trade, bridging a period of extraordinary change in global trade. These commercial role models with the spirit of ambition, creativeness, adventure have inspired young generation. In spite of this, we should dissect the other side of a person, the negative character----after all, humans have their own weakness. Chen guanbiao, a well-known philanthropist in China, cheated the public in the ice bucket challenge, who sat in a bucket of warm water with a thin layer of floating ice at the surface instead of one full of ice. Obviously, such character of a philanthropist must be abhorred in a society. Furthermore, these heroes or role models have grown up in a different family and social background, and so behave according to their education, belief, value system, endowment, capacity and experience. They, though respectable, do not reveal all the picture of the character of a society.

From philosophical perspective, social ideal plays a dominant and navigational role in individual one, including from heroes or role models, which is referred to personal thing or fractional character. Only in the condition that individual ideals conform to social ideal can one's ideal realize, and if not, one will fail to do it.

It is oversimplified from the character of heroes or role models to identify the character of a society. At least, there are two facets for the character of a society far from that of specific groups like heroes or role models. One is that the character of a society arises from average groups such as families, educational institutions, workplaces, the basic constituents of a society. A society must advocate such character as family harmony, respect each other, educational equality, enterprise's obligation and integrity. The other is that the character of a society motivates its citizens to act towards its expected goals like consuming, education, social tasks concerning work and interaction, which must be obeyed by all of them. People do what a society wants them to do in order to prosper and develop.

However, a society has also negative character, which promotes the change and development of the character of a society, and with the vicissitude of dynasty, the characteristics of a society is adjusted to adapt to the social development and necessity. For instance, hierarchical system impedes the realization of social ideal-----inequality, unfairness, prejudice will be filled in the society. But social bad character will gradually recede, replaced by a new and good character. From the culture generation of Qin period, Chinese traditional culture has experienced Confucian culture for thousands of years, and has been evolving present multi-culture, which has been rooted in the thinking mode of Chinese people. Social system has undergone imperial period, feudalism, to current socialism that has greatly enfranchised Chinese people from slavery-----in which people enjoy larger freedom, a higher level of the standard of life, better education. over periods various aspects of a society have also obtained substantial improvement. In contrast, in general speaking, individual character like heroes or role models has slowly acquired from childhood, young to adult under the influence of those people around them such as family members, friends, teachers, etc., until old age it stops developing whereas social character does not cease.

From the above-mentioned, there are many ways to make a broad and deep understanding of the character of a society, not merely by analyzing the heroes or role models chosen by the society. In different social context, social character is different largely from one another. For example, China has 56 nationalities, whose traditions and customs are the organic continent of Chinese culture, America is an immigrant country, in which people have different religions and beliefs, and emphasize independence, individualism. In addition, economic system, consumption pattern also reveal the character of a society.

In conclusion, only by checking the character of heroes or role models is it too narrow and incomplete to analyze the character of a society. Perhaps the best way to do this is to combine more means to understand the character of a society from comprehensive perspective.
