People are living longer now than ever before. At the same time the young population is declining while the number of old people is rising. Will this development be a benefit for the society? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having more old people in the country?

Now a day’s more people are living longer due to good health facilities. Although the older population is increasing and the young population is falling down. I believe this progress has got some advantages and disadvantages for the society.

On the one hand, there are some disadvantages for the society of having more elderly people in the country. Firstly, it is burden to tax payers to pay the medical and living expenses for more aged people. In the first world countries, for example, government provide pensions to old people to meet their medical and living expenses and hence these are paid by the working people to government by means of tax. Secondly, due to high cost of living in the present competitive world both husband and wife should work to meet their requirements. However, it is very hard to them to stay one of them at home to look after their elderly parents.

On the other hand, having old people in the country has got numerous advantages to the society. To put this into perspective, grandparents will look after their grand children if both the parents go for work and therefore maintain the close relationship with them by telling old stories and motivate them to be a good child in the society. In addition, elderly people can be beneficial for the society by solving the problems with their experience. In many third world countries, for instance, old and experienced people will resolve the disputes between two groups or villages. Moreover, aged people will understand and explain the traditions and customs of their respective culture to their younger generation.

In conclusion, I believe having older people in the country will have some advantages and drawbacks for the society.
