There were shows estimated world illiteracy rates by region and by gender 2000. There were difference between male and female in different region. The bar chart compare the ratio of uneducational population divided by sex in six region of the word in 2000. Men and women unable to read or write made up 1% and 2% in developed countries. In comparison proportion of illiterates cities. In latin america and the Caribbean were higher 10% and 11%. In east asia and Oceania however, the gap was enormous there were 20% illiterates women compared to only 8% men.

As regard the other region Sub-Saharan africa had greater proportion of the unschooled population 48% and 30% men. A similar proportion was seen in arab states were 53% illiteracy rates of women and illiteracy rates of men was 28%. However, it noticeable that in south asia were illiteracy rates 57% and 34% respectively for women and men. Also south asia stood out as having worst illiteracy figure in year 2000.
