The charts below give information about the number of marriages and divorces between 1970 and 2000, and the marital status of adult Americans in two of the years.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar graphs illustrate how the number of marriages and divorces changed over the period from 1970 to 2000 and give information concerning the marital status of American adults at the beginning and the end of the research period.

According to the first graph, the number of marriages was more than twice the numbwr of divorces. In 1980, the number of marriages was equal to the previous year while that of divorces slightly rose to approximate 1.3 million. After 1980, the number of both marriages and divorces showed a downward trend. At the end of the period, the number of marriages were exactly twice as that of divorces, reaching 2 million and one million respectively.

In the case of the second graph, the most striking feature is that the percentage of divorced couples almost doubled from around 4 percent to almost 10 percent. The percentage of people who never married also rose slightly. The ratio of married people and widowed people decreased respectively from about 70 percent to 60 percent and approximately 10 percent to 6 percent.

Overall, adult Americans were more likely to live alone in 2000 than in 1970
