The charts show information about the number of marriages and divorces and marital status in the USA from 1970 to 2000.
Overall, it is clear that the number of marriages and divorces in USA decreased slightly. However, the proportion of divorced people increased while this figure for married people declined.
Looking at more details, we can see that the number of marriages enjoyed the highest figure in 1970, at exactly 2.5 millions. This figure for the number of divorces was lower, which was only 1 million. Ten years later, the number of marriages remained stable while the figure of divorces reached a peak of nearly 1.5 millions. Then these figures declined slightly and ended at 2 millions of marriages and 1 million of divorces in 2000.
In term of marital status of adults Americans, in 1970, the married people accounted for the largest proportion, at 70%. In contrast, this figure for divorced people was less than 5%. People who never married and widowed accounted for 15% and 8%, respectively. In 2000, the percentage of married people decreased to 60% while this figure for divorced people increased to nearly 10%. The proportion of never married and widowed people were 20% and 5%, respectively.
