The diagram shows the components of a neuron and how it works

Write a report for a university, lecturer describing the information shown below.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagram illustrates the parts of a neuron and the way it operates.

Overall, there are 6 parts in a neuron starting from cell body and culminating with terminal buttons.

According to the illustration, the head of the neuron is called the cell body or soma which remains at the core. The area surrounding the cell body spreads out like the branches of a tree into thin threads and is called dendrites. From the cell body extends a long axon, covered with myelin sheath and ends with branching out into terminal buttons.

The dendrites receive messages from other cells and passes them from the soma to the other neurons, in the form of an electrical signal (also known as action potential).Subsequently, through the axon the impulse reaches the terminal buttons which in turn relays them to another neuron, muscles or glands. The myelin sheath aids in rapid conduction of neural impulses from one end to the other.
