Asthma

Essay topics:

Asthma

The passage given, has some holes in it's facts, and is thus open to debate. The passage suggests that, after an attack, the bronchi revert to its normal condition, until the next attack. But, evidence stated by the professor in the lecture tends to contradict this statement.

The professor says that, there is new research suggesting, that for some patients, after an asthmatic attack, their bronchi do revert to their normal state as expected, instead, remain permanently narrowed. This may be due to a term known as "remodelling". Remodelling occurs from to the scarring of the organ, due to repeated bouts of the attack that take place in an individual. Hence, we can safely say that "remodelling" is not just a consquence of the attack, but may also be the cause for it.

This is further evidenced in the research which was conducted on several young children. It depicts that many of these young children are not only susceptible to remodelling in childhood, but sometimes undergo remodelling even before birth! This occurs due to several reasons, such as the genetic make-up of a child, and even, the environmental factors that the child is exposed to before birth. Hence, the child is born, naturally prone to asthmatic attacks. From this, we can note that, "remodelling" is the fundamental cause of these attacks in humans.

Therefore, recent research has given us enough reason to doubt some of the claims in the passage given to us, which states that bronchial narrowing is temporary, and only takes place during an attack.
