Essay topics:

three possible theories that could explain the extinction of the Steller's sea cow

The reading material mentions three possible theories that could explain the extinction of the Steller's sea cow, while the speaker refutes all of the theories, claiming that they all have problems.

Firstly, the writer asserts that the sea cows might be overhunted to extinction by native Siberian people, because the sea cows could be a good source of food for the people in harsh environment. The lecturer questions this weak argument, pointing out the fact that the population of Siberian people was quite small; therefore, they did not need to hunt a large number of the sea cows to survive.

Another important point made in the passage is that ecosystems disturbances might cause a drop in the sea cows' main source of food, kelp; therefore, the sea cows might starve to death. The professor does not think this theory hold water tightly. According to her, if there was a ecosystems disturbances, the decline of population was not only appearing in kelp. Other populations of mammal animals, like whales, might underwent a decline as well. However, the number of whales was never reported a decline during the time.

Finally, the author believes that European fur traders should be responsible for the sea cows' extinction. The professor casts doubts on this point. According to her, by the time European fur traders arrived, the population of the sea cows has already been quite small. Thus, other reasons might cause this serious reduction, not the European fur traders who were just the last one to arrive.
