Tidal Power

Essay topics

The article here discusses the Tidal Power produced by constructing dams and barrages across river estuary or at the mouth of the bay. The article also discusses the requirements and benefits about tidal power. However, the professor in lecture bring into consideration various drawbacks on the environment, the economy of that region and damage to marine life and refuses to the point made in the article.

First, the article describes that by the use difference in water level during high and low tides power can be generated. But the professor says only the fraction of power is only generated and there can be only little contribution at the regional level.

Second, the article states that there is no pollution, no release of greenhouse gases. But the professor points out some points that affect and damage the surrounding ecosystem. The first point as stated by professor is change in quality of water which would affect the wildlife in that surrounding region. Second the change in level of mud and sediments in that particluar area or region where dam is constucted would affect birds, and third point in continuation with this, due to increase in salinity of water would result in increase in red tide organism which paralyse shell fish and disrupt the marine ecosystem.

Third, the professor states that the migratory fish would not be able to cross the dam or barrage and would affect the fish migratory path. Also the professor stated that, design can be made for this drawback but this would increase the cost of project. And lastly the professor also stated that the fishing boats are dependent on bays and opening of river and thus constucting a dam across this would affect the fishing boat and in turn the economy of that region.
