TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

Both the reading and the lecture are suggesting a plan to change the work policy from five-days a week to four days a week . The reading presents the merits of working four- days a week for economy as a whole ,companies, and individuals who decided to take the option. However, the professor casts doubts on all these claims and refutes each of the author's reasons.

Firstly, the reading claims that this new policy will increase company profit since the employees will feel rested and alert. The lecturer opposes this idea by explaining that hiring new workers will force the company to spend more money. The new worker will need training, medical insurance , office spaces, and more computers. As a result, these additional costs will decrease company profits.

Secondly, working four days will reduce the unemployment rate significantly. The workload of current employees will be shifted to new worker.Nevertheless, the professor refutes this idea and elaborates as follow. The company may ask current employees to work overtime. The company also might raise expection that the current worker will do the same work that they did in five days workweek. As a result, no additional job will be created.

Finally, the passage claims that this new policy will be beneficial for the worker as they will have extra time to spend with their family, pursuing special intersts,or enjoying activities. On the other hand, the professor disproves this idea by saying that this new policy may harm the employees future career and decrease their quality of life. Four days workers are the first ones to lose their job during economic downturn and passed over promotion as companies prefer full time workers for higher positions.
