This essay presents an opportunity to discuss whether the works of the most famous seventeenth-century Dutch painter – Rembrandt were actually painted by him. This essay comprises of various points agreed and disagreed upon. I will further elaborate on the points presented in the lecture and the passage.

The speaker agrees that the paintings were actually made by Rembrandt. The speaker furnishes several points to prove his theory which are as follows: Firstly , The speaker positions that the painting was analyzed by experts . On the basis of the pigment analysis , the experts believed that the fur collar was not a part of the original painting . It was drawn over the original painting probably 100 years later. Secondly, the speaker states that on investigating the painting it was discovered that the original painting had a simple collar instead of a fur collar. The simple collar reflects light illuminating the face of the woman which was genuine enough to believe.
Lastly, the speaker points out that the actual painting was made on a single piece of wood .It was discovered that the single piece of wood belonged to the same tree used by Rembrandt for one of his prior painting – his self portrait with a hat. Various wooden panels were glued on the sides of the painting probably to make it look more valuable and grand.
The author of the reading passage contradicts the views of the speaker in the lecture . The author statuses various points to highlight the inconsistency in the dressing of the woman in the portrait which are as follows : Firstly , the author describes the inconsistency in the subjects’ clothing. He mentions that a white linen cap is worn by the woman which was generally worn by servants . However , the coat worn by the lady has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. The author points out that Rembrandt was known for his attention to the details of his subjects’ clothing, would not have made such an error. However , The speaker opposes the author by stating that the fur collar was drawn over the original painting. The original painting had a simple collar . Secondly , the author states that Rembrandt was considered to be a master of light and shadow . However , in the painting none of the two elements complement each other . The author describes the issue by stating that the dark fur collar doesn’t reflect light .Hence , the face of the woman appears partially in shadow. Nevertheless , the speaker contradicts the author by stating that the original painting had a simple collar . The simple collar reflect light due to which , the face was well illuminated . Lastly , the author states that the painting was made on different panels which , were glued together . However , the speaker states that the original painting was made on a single piece of wood .

The essay above clearly correlates the agreements and disagreements if the works of the most famous seventeenth-century Dutch painter – Rembrandt were actually painted by him.
