The reading and the lecture are both about the building of the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest, which was known as a great houses, '' massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms. The author of the reading believes that there is three theories about the utilization of those large buildings. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that all the evidence about the using of the large buildings is not convincing.

First of all, the author claims that the large houses was used as a residential places that contains hundreds of peoples. He believes that the Chaco house is looks like the "apartment buildings" at Taos. This point is challenged by the lecturer.
He says that if there is a hundreds of people were living in the great houses, that means a hundreds of fire should be there for cooking and the other life activities. Furthermore, she points out that there is only ten fires which will not support a hundreds of peoples needs.

Secondly, the author mentioned the using of the chaco houses as a food storage places. The grain maize was one of the stored foods. The size of the great houses was one of the evidence about using it, in order to save the maize for a long time. The lecture refutes this theories in terms of : a large empty room could be used as a food storage but the excavation of the great houses haven't uncovered any traces of the maize or maize container. Moreover, there is no any spoiled maize in the floor or any big containers.

Finally, using of the great houses as a ceremonious center explained in the article with some evidences as: the excavation of the mound reveals that it contains a large numbers of broken pots; That, means the people were ate there meals and through the pots that formed the mound. In addition to, such a ceremonies have been documented for other native American cultures. The author disprove this idea through the many arguments such as the mound was full of sand and stones of building materials, even constructions tools; where, the mound is just a trash heap of stuff thrones away by the worker when the house was being build.

In conclusions the three theories that proved by the articles has been defeated by the lecture.
