TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

The reading and the lecture are both about the true identity of a big building in Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. The author of the reading suggests three purposes of the building in Chaco could be. The professor casts doubts on the claims made by the author, which he thinks that there are not enough evidence to support.

First of all, the author states that those building could be use as a shelter for hundred of peoples. The similarity in large, well-known "apartment-building" in Taos, Mexico with the building in Chaco Canyon is the root of his theory. The lecturer cast doubt on this claim made by the author. He believes that, even though the similarity outside looks might lead to the conclusion in the reading, the inside might not be so. He further points out that the inside structure is not compatible to hold hundred of people due to the lack of cooking fireplace and rooms.

Sencondly, the author suggests his second theory of those building function as the food storage, which used to keep grain maize for long-lasting use. The professor argues this point made by the author. He, on the other hand, thinks that because there is no trace of maize or maize container, the second theory is a lack of logical evidence to back up itself.

Finally, the reading's third theory mentions the possibility of those building as a ceremonial place. A pile of old material found by the archaeologist in the place is interpreted as an indication for a place in charge for held festival. This interpretation is explained differently by the professor. He thinks that pile of old material and broken pots are mere trash, thrown away by workers and not considered as evidence for the festival place.
