TPO-06 - Integrated Writing Task Communal online encyclopedias represent one of the latest resources to be found on the Internet. They are in many respects like traditional printed encyclopedias collections of articles on various subjects. What is specifi

In the lecture the professor disagrees with the opinion of communal online encyclopedias presented in the reading and admits that it is because of prejudice against and ignorance about a formation of the online encyclopedias.

First, the article states that the communal online encyclopedias are not always written by experts so they can be inaccurate and unreliable unlike traditional encyclopedias, those are written by experts having special academic accuracy. But the professor claims that no encyclopedia is perfectly accurate. What really important is how easily and quickly the errors can be corrected. In this regard, online encyclopedias are better than the traditional ones, as inaccurate content can be revised much faster.

Second, the reading explains that the computer programmers and dishonest users can easily make change purposefully in the online encyclopedias. But the professor admits about the two strategies to protect the online encyclopedia articles. First, some important content is presented in a “read only” format that can’t be revised. Second, special editors monitor changes made in the articles and eliminate revisions those are malicious.

Third, the article posits that the communal online encyclopedias often create a false impression about the information as it gives equal space to articles on minor topics and serious topics. But the professor argues that the diversity of contents and topics reflects the diversity of people’s interests, which is not a weakness, but a strength of this resource. In contrast, traditional encyclopedias have limited space and editors who choose which entries to include do not always take diverse interests into account.
