The professor explains three arguments opposing the points stated in the reading passage about the authenticity of portrait which is believed belong to Jane Austen.

First, the professor argues Austen was dead when she was 70 years old. So, her family member could not have to seen her. Although the reading passage states that Austen's family gave permission in order to use the portrait as paint, the professor repudiates this idea based on aforementioned explanations.

Second, it is mentioned in the reading passage that the portrait is highly similar in every details to the sketch which had been painted by her sister Cassandra. In contrast, the professor draws attention to the idea that Austen's family which was very large and they could have a lot of Jane Austen or girls in similar age in the family. So, the professor rejects this idea by giving an alternative hypothesis which makes the reading's idea dubious.

Third and last, the reading passage asserts that there is evidence indicates that the portrait had been painted when Austen was a teenager. Although the painting has not any signature in order to determine time and creator of it, evidence demonstrates that the style of painting is very similar to Ozias Humphery, who would hired by Austen's family, and was active when Jane was the age of the girl in the painting. On the contrary, the professor disproves the idea by pointing the stamp which is on the back of the painting canvas. As he staes, the canvas was sold by the man, who started his business in painting 27 years after Jane's teenager and Humphery's active period of time.
