TPO-14 - Integrated Writing Task Every year, forest fires and severe stormscause a great deal of damage to forests in the northwestern United States. One way of dealing with the aftermath of these disasters is called salvage logging, which is the practice

The passage states that the Salvage logging is beneficial for both that is damaged forest and to economy and he provides three hypotheses to prove his point. However, the speaker is not in favor of this notion and contraindicates his theories by providing following reasons.

First, the author tells that dead trees occupy space and thus it hinders the growth of other fresh trees in that area. Conversely, the professor opposes his point and explains that it is not true as the cleaning of dead trees is indeed harmful for the growth of fresh trees as they provide vital nutrients on decomposition. The natural way of cleaning provides time to the soil to get replenish with necessary nutrients that are essential for the better growth of all the plants.

Second, the passage says that the dead trees provides habitat to the insect such as spruce bark beetle that are lethal for other trees. The speaker refutes this point and argues that these insects have lived in forest over hundred years without causing any damage to it. In addition, these dead trees also give habitat to other insects and birds that are important for the forest in long run.

Third, in the last professor rebuts the statement made in the passage that this process is more beneficial for the economy of the industries and gives job opportunity to the local people. He reveals that in reality it is more expensive as they use helicopters and heavy vehicles which are very expensive. Moreover, the company hires trained workers from outside to do this job. Thus, it is not a permanent and good job opportunity for the local people as suggested by the passage.
