TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

The reading passage states that genetic modification is now being used to modify some trees which make it possible to have trees with more yields, faster growth, and stand in some harsh conditions. The passage provides three benefits for supporting the effectiveness of this method. Meanwhile, the professor casts serious doubts on this claim and believes that none of these benefits are practical and refutes each of the reasons.
First, the reading passage asserts that genetically modified trees are designed to be harder than natural ones because they can survive more according to some of the recent examinations. The lecturer, on the other hand, makes the argument that if genetically modified trees are introduced to a new habitat, they will all perish. In fact, they cannot survive in the virus infected area because they are not designed for this exposure. Meanwhile, she adds that a few of the escaped native trees might make it better in this hard situation due to their adaptation.
Second, while the reading declares that an abundant amount of economic outcomes would be the possible result of this genetically modified trees, the professor refutes this idea and thinks that there are some hidden costs for this change. She comments that since there is a law for planting this particular species, farmers have to pay every time they plant them.
Third, the reading passage posits that the implementation of genetically modified trees might prohibit overexploitation of wild trees. The passage states that these trees would satisfy the requirement for wood and save the endangered native trees. The lecturer, however, disagrees and says that they will damage the area. She mentions that since these species grow aggressively, they might outcompete other rare ones and may soon crowd out natural trees.
