In northwestern North America, population of the yellow cedar decline gradually. The article presents three hypotheses behind the decline population. Whereas, in the lecture, the professor casts about the specific hypothesis of the author and says that it is not satisfactory hypothesis.
Firstly, the passage claims that cedar bark beetle is one kinds of insect parasite is responsible for plummet the population of the yellow cedar. The beetle larvae eat the wood and constant attack causes kill the yellow cedar. In contrast, the lecturer mentions that healthy yellow cedar resistant to specific insect in specially cedar bark beetle. Bark and leave of yellow cedar saturate with powerful chemical and when the insect the attack the yellow cedar, chemical release which is resistant to insect. Cedar bark beetle eats dead seeds which is not harm to trees.
Secondly, the author emphasizes that bears vigorously eat the high sugar content bark causes the damage and weaken to yellow cedar tree, eventually, die the tree. However, the speaker explains that bears eat on some of the bark trees but they are not spread on the whole North America. Yellow cedar spread in the North America mainland and island but bear's population not in the islands. Therefore, with and without dears are not reasons that decline the yellow cedar trees.
Lastly, the article implies that climate change and freezing cold night affect the root system which causes the decline yellow cedar trees. On the contrary, the professor states that author forgive to mentions that lower elevation of warmer environment trees more decline trees population than high elevation of colder environment.
