The article describes zebra mussel as a none stoppable invasion creature to the North American waterways. And the zebra mussel's invasion would cause the shrink of local species. However, the speaker refuses the ideas in the reading material.

To begin with, unlike our predecessors, we could control the transportation of zebra mussels from Eastern Europe to North America. These shellfish was taken into the America by "ballast water". Instead of using fresh-water, we could now ask the ships to fulfill their "ballast water" by sea-water. In this case, fresh-water mussels could be killed by the salty sea-water.

Besides, zebra mussels could only colonize the new habitat in the beginning. The birds are the predators of mussels. Sooner or later, the native birds would find out their new food source, mussels. Until then, the over popularized mussel will become birds dishes.

Moreover, it's unlikely that mussels would eat up all the food in the new habitat. In fact, the mussels could generate more nutrition for the local fish.

All in all, from the professor, the zebra mussels have nature predators in the new habitat. And they could generate more food to the locate fishes. This invasion species would not threat to the local freshwater fish.
