TPO-26 - Integrated Writing Task The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot b

In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture deal with the increasing population of the zebra mussel in America. Regarding this topic, the lecturer argues that the spreading of the zebra mussel can be controlled and it is not a significant threat to other fish populations. This contradicts the author’s assertion that there is no way to stop the expanding of the zebra mussel and it totally harm to other fishes.
First of all, according to the lecture, it is true that the spreading of the zebra mussel in America could not controlled in the past because at that time, people did not have knowledge about the mussel. In contrary, people now found an effective way to prevent the population of the mussel from increasing. For instance, if the “ballast water” that was one of a cause the increasing refill fresh water instead of ocean water, the mussel will be eliminated. This counters the author’s view point that people cannot stop the invasion of the mussel because of human transportation, which allowed the mussel to spread.
Secondly, the lecturer goes on to say that it is unconvincing that the population of the mussel is unable to be reduced because there is no predator of it. Even though, there was no predator when the mussel started to come to America, after that the mussel’s predators appeared such as birds. This is because birds needed to find food resources and they started to eat the mussels. This challenges the author’s claim that people cannot stop the domination of the mussels because they do not have a predator and are able to adapt well to diversified conditions.
Lastly, the lecturer maintains that the population of the mussels does not always a negative effect on other fishes. The mussels have a negative impact on fish that eat plankton but also have a positive effect on other fish such as bottom-feeding fish. This rebuts the author’s argument that the number of the mussels contributed to the decline of overall fish population.
