In this set of materials, the reading passage introduces three possible reasons of little ice age that happened between 1350 and 1900C.E. However, the professor raises questions on the ideas and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author of the article states that ice age's cause is perhaps related to ocean currents which brought melted glaciers. On the contrary, the speaker posits that in this case only Europe and North America should have experienced the ice age, not other areas. Since, New Zealand and Africa had cold weather in the mentioned period we can infer that ocean currents cannot explain the ice age appropriately.
Furthermore, the reading passage touches on volcanic eruption- which deprives the earth surface from sunlight- to justify the ice age. Conversely, the lecturer explains that if volcanic eruption happened people should have seen it but there is not any report about this event in that time. According to the professor volcanic eruption results in colorful sunlight and gray snow which were not observed by people. In addition, volcanic eruption was not strong enough to make the ice age happen.
Finally, the speaker was not convinced that human decreases in population and subsequently growing forest trees leaded to ice age, which is the last mentioned theory in the article. He indicates that human population decreased very fast; therefore, there was not sufficient time to affect the climate. Moreover, human population increased after that period again and people started to cut down the trees because growing population needed lands for agriculture.
