Tpo 28- integrated writing

The reading states that Robert E. Peary who is a famous adventurer had a trip to the North poleon April 7, 1909 , and provides three reasons of support. On the other hand, the professor argues that the evidences in the listening passage are not convincing, and refutes each of the mentioned reasons.

First, the reading states that a commitee was instucted by the National Geographic Society in order to conduct a research on whether Peary had reached to the North Pole or not. The committee based on the records and Peary's equipment reached to dicision that he indeed reached to the North Pole. However, the professor claims that a committee had consisted Peary's close friend and he would wish to gain money from his adventure. Therefore, the committee's explanation and decisions could be biased.

Second, the reading posits that a recent expedition, Tom Avery's expedition, supports that Peary probably reached the North Pole from Ellesmere Island in only 37 days. The professor, however, refutes this point by saying that it is true that Tom Avery's sled was similar to the Peary's,but ,in fact, the weight of Peary's sled is slightly higher than Avery's. Because, Peary had carried the food by sled, yet Avery had got his food falled from the plane. In addition, the weather circumstance were different too. Avery experienced the proper condition in comparison to Peary.

Third, the reading states that the photographs taken by Peary support his claim. Since, sun's position in the photograph and the measuring the sahdow in Peary photographs cleary support Peary's claim. In the listetning , the professor refutes this claim. Since the photographs were taken by old technology, they are blured and fuzzy. Therefore, measuring the shadows and the position of the sun would not be measured percisely. Therefor, the photographs did not provide strong evidence that Peary reached to the North Pole.
