TOEFL T P O 28 Integrated Writing Task

The article and the lecture are both deal with whether an accomplished explorer Robert E. Peary reached the North Pole. While the author of the article thinks that there are accurate evidences for his achievement for three specific reasons, the lecturer opposes the author's claim. In her opinion, these arguments are not convincing.

First, the author of the reading claims that the National Geographic Society took time for making a record to track the well-known adventurer. Furthermore, it is stated in the article that the recoding of the account is precise, consistent, and persuasive enough to consider him to reach the North Pole. In contrast, the lecturer argues that the National Geographic Society's team includes one of Peary's friends. Additionally, she maintains that since the investigation took only 2 days, which is considerable short amount of time for making accurate conclusion, the evidence is not objective.

Second, the author of the article mentions that the argument of Peary's 37 days of expedition is closed by Tom Avery's same accomplishment. On top of that, it is added that recent British explorer uses same type of dogsled as Peary’s and spends less that 37 days to reach the destination. However, the lecturer calls his argument into question by saying that Tom Avery's situation is completely different taking into account of several factors. Further, he maintains that the British explorer carries less weight than Peary does, and the recent expedition's weather was favorable that the older situation.

Third, the writer asserts that the photograph that is taken by Peary features the document of North Pole's location. In addition to that, the author in the article added that the shadow of the Surf matches with the Sun's position as if it was in the North Pole. As opposed to the author, the lecturer holds that the photograph can't provide precise information. She highlights that since it was dated 100 years, the old photo is blurry and faded.
