TPO-31 - Integrated Writing Task A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some

In the given set of materials, the main topic is concentrated on whether the Sinosauropteryx had feathers. Though the author contends several reasons to oppose the pattern of fine lines is the evidence, the speaker argues that the fine lines surrounding the bones is strong evidence to believe Sinosauropteryx has feathers.

To begin with, while the claim that these lines are formed after death, the professor hold a different view. She points out that it cannot account for there are no other animals’ decomposition. In fact, volcanic ash can make the fossils preserved well, so that they are not fibers but feathers.

Then, according to the passage, lines are more likely to be fills not feathers. However, the speaker tells us the difference of fills and feathers that is the former do not contain a special proteins which the latter contain. Thus this is a strong evidence to show the high possibility that Sinosauropteryx had feathers.

In addition, the speaker also disagrees with the third reason that Sinosauropteryx’s feather is useless, since they do not own functions of fly. It is likely to be used as display like peacooks which use colorful feathers of tail to mate. What’s more, we have confirmed that their feathers are colorful which highly supports the reason. As a result, the reading passage’s last point is refuted.
