TPO-31 - Integrated Writing Task A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some

The reading passage contends that there are several reasons critics have opposed that a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones of Sinosauropteryx is not feathers. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the ideas in the reading passage that the fine lines might not even show functional structures of Sinosauropteryx, however rather structures that were shifted after their death. This is attributed to the fact that there are evidences that decomposed other animals’ skins have preserved clearly under volcanic ash at the same site with Sinosauropteryx. And it is functional structures of a living dinosaur. Thus, the reading passage’s first point is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the idea in the reading passage that scientist cannot contends with strong certainty what part of the dinosaur’s anatomy the structures were, even thought the lines are evidences of real structures of a Sinosauropteryx. This is because there are chemical differences between feather and fiber. While feathers have proton bedycharaton, fiber does not have it. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the idea in the reading passage that the lines in the Sinosauropterys fossil have located along the backbone and the tail of the animal. It is obvious that it would have different function. For example, pica birds have long feathers with their tail to attract mate. It can be used for displaying themselves. The lines have been used for displaying with colorful such as orange and white. As a result, the reading passage’s last point is refuted.
