TPO-31 - Integrated Writing Task A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some

In this set of materials, the reading passage explores the opposition of Sinosauropteryx of being a feathered dinosaur, and the professor's lecture deals with the same topic. However, she casts doubts on these oppositions, and in the lecture, professor provides three specific points to corroborate her opinion.
First, although the reading passage suggests that the fine lines are impossible to represent functional structures of a living dinosaur since their skin may have decomposed into fibers, the professor affirms in the lecture that their skins are well-preserved instead of decomposing. This is because other skin fossils which dig out in the same sites also preserved well; therefore the lines are evidence of feathers. Clearly, the professor's affirmation refutes its counterpart in the reading.
Moreover, despite the statement in the reading that the lines are more likely to be remains of frills than feathers, the professors contends that the lines are feathers. Then she substantiates this point with the fact that frills and feathers are composed of different chemical sources and only remains of feather contain this chemical substance.
Finally the professor assets that the feather in the tail functions as courtship whereas the author of the reading claims that the feather in the tail serves no function. The professor explains that this claim is indefensible by pointing out that peacocks also have beautiful feathers in their tails for display function.
In conclusion, the professor clearly identifies the weaknesses of in the reading passage, and she cogently shows that the central argument in the reading is untenable.
