TPO 32

The passage states that there are several theories about what might have caused the strange sounds which are emitted in decades of 1960 until 1980 when sailors in Russian submarines patrolling the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean and provides three of these theories. The lecturer, nevertheless, explains that these theories have certain problems like other theories and disproves each of them.

First, the reading claims that the reason of strange sound is courtship ritual between male and female ocra whales which are known to inhabit in the area of studies. Conversely, the lecturer opposes this point by saying that whales live near the surface of the water and the submarines were detected in deep of water could not be able to hear their sound from the surface. So, the strange sound is related other factors except for whales.

In addition, the article posits that the sound was caused by giant squid which are huge marine invertebrates that live in deep in the ocean and prey on large fish. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that this huge animal appeared after the time of detecting. It means this animal lived after 1980, while the time of detecting of the submarine was before 1980. Therefore, there is no reason to hear sound in that time.

Finally, the passage expresses that the strange sounds were emitted by foreign submarines that use a kind of military technology for patrolling the area. Quite on the contrary, the lecturer emphasizes that foreign submarines moved around and changed their directions rapidly. We also learn that there was no technology that Russian submarines could act as fast as the foreign submarines. Hence, this theory is not persuasive enough.
