TPO-42

There has been a modern trend to employ glass in buildings by architectures. The major problem with this preference is that it can be very threatening to bird as they are unable to detect the glass and mistake it for open air. The passage present three solutions for this dilemma, all of which are countervailed by the professor during the lecture.

The first solution proposed in the passage is one-way glass; a special type of glass which is only transparent on one side. This glass will appear as a mirror from the outside. It is suggested in the text that birds will comprehend this glass as an impediment. But the professor clearly opposes, declaring that the birds will not be able to distinguish between the reflection they see and open air. Thus, one-way glass will be just as harmful for birds.

Secondly, the passage imposes that by drawing colorful lines on the glass, birds might be able to detect the glass and fly around the building. This solution is also objected in the lecture. The professor states that the openings between the painted drawings will appear as holes to birds, who will try to fly through them. Unless the paintings are drawn very close together, which will diminish the purpose of utilizing glass in the building in the first place.

The final solution is the creation of a small artificial magnetic field by powerful electromagnets stabilized on the building to divert the birds away. The professor also dismisses this solution by stating that birds only use their ability to sense Earth's magnetic field when traveling long distances. For short distances, their sight and detection of light is utilized, thus simulated magnetic signals will not be of use.
