TPO-42 - Integrated Writing Task Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when the

The lecturer contends that none of the three solutions provided by the reading passage can stop birds getting injured by glass windows. He casts doubt on each solution and states the flaw of each one, as is presented below.

The flaw of the first solution is that the outside of one-way glass reflects as a mirror while birds do not know what is a mirror. To be more specific, the outside of one-way glass windows will reflect sky and trees, which will make birds consider them as real sky and trees. As a result, they may fly directly to the one-way glass windows and get injured by these windows.

In addition, problems exist in the second solution. According to the reading passage, there will be openings between strips on the colorful windows. However, the lecturer mentions that birds would consider these openings as holes so that they may try to fly through the holes. To prevent them flying through the holes, people would set these openings as small as possible. As a result, the rooms with these kind of window will be dark, which is not a good idea to human.

Moreover, the third solution will not work well as showed by the lecturer. He emphasizes that birds navigate themselves by magnetic fields only when they are travelling for a long distance, such as migrating in winter. However, when they have short trips, such as fly from one side of a city to the other side, they rely on eyes and brightness of lights to navigate themselves. Therefore, creating artificial magnetic fields will not work because birds fly only for a short distance in the city and will not be affected by the artificial magnetic fields.
