TPO-45 - Integrated Writing Task Any student of paleontology will be struck by the fact that a great many animals of the past were considerably larger than they are today. This holds true for species ranging from dinosaurs to most mammals. Just why they w

In the lecture, the professor discusses why the three explanations listed in the reading on the larger body size of ancient animals are not plausible.

To begin with, the passage claims that ancient animals were bigger because the atmosphere contained more oxygen-a much needed substance for life activities-at that time. However, the speaker refutes this by stating that the oxygen level were actually lower due to frequent volcanic activities. Hence, it is unconvincing to say that thicker oxygen in the air made animals larger.

Next, contrary to the second theory in the reading passage that the verdant plants provided sufficient nutrition for animals to grow larger, the lecturer points out that despite the huge amount of plants life in ancient time, they did not contain much nutrients, for the carbon dioxide in the air was scarce.

Finally, the instructor rules out the possibility of warmer environment stimulating the growth of animals, as asserted in the reading material. Animals and people living in warmer places, for example, tend to have smaller body size, facilitating the process of heat-realising. If they had larger body size, they would have to eat more to gain adequate energy, which in turn requires more efforts to release the heat from body.
