Both the lecture and the reading discuss the decline of the yellow cedar trees. The reading enumerates three hypotheses to illustrate why the decline happened. However, the lecture disagrees. It claims that each of the reading hypotheses are not convening and in adequate to prove the reason of the decline.

First of all, the reading states that insect’s parasites are the first reason for decrease in the population of the yellow cedar. The larvas of the beetles eat the wood of the trees caused damage to the trees. But, the lecture opposes this point saying that the healthy yellow cedar trees are not vulnerable to these kinds of parasites. Only the week, damage trees are easily attacked by the parasites. According to the professor the healthy yellow cedar contain chemicals that are poisons to insects.

Second the reading states that the brown bear is another cause of the decline. The bears claw the trees to eat the bark as it contains high amount of sugar, which weaken the tree and lead to kill the trees. However, the lecture refutes. It claims that the bears are not the main responsible cause for the overall decline. Some places like the island has no bears, and still has decline in the yellow cedar trees.

Lastly, the reading argues that the change in the climate cause decline in the tress populations. The roots of the trees start to grow in the winter rather than growing in the spring. Which lead to frost damage of the roots and consequently kill the trees. Yet, the lecture disagrees. it claims that frost damage is not the real cause of the decline. Furthermore, in lower elevation in which the weather is warm there are a lot of trees damage. On the other hand in higher elevation there is no damage. The roots of the trees are more sensitive to the change.
