In these set of materials, the reading passage and the lecture discuss about the origination of the odd sound named "quckers" that sailors in the Russian submarines patrolling could recognize for some decades from 1960s to 1980s. The reading passage holds forth several causes of the phenomena by providing three theories. However, in the lecture, the professor disproves all three reasons mentioned in the article about what might have caused that strange sound in the ocean.

First, according to the reading passage, the sound was coming from the female and male Ora whales during their courtships. While in the lecture, the professor rejects this theory by explaining that the sound had been heard in the deep of the ocean, in where the submarines have to be for patrolling. She adds that in general whales are in the surface of the ocean not in the deep.

Second, the article mentions that the sound was from a giant squid. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this theory and cites that the phenomena were recorded by the sailors for just two decades from 1960 to 1980. She also declares that those squids were continuing their lives for too long time after the records.

Third, the reading passage describes that the sound was coming from some military technologies of the other submarines which were patrolling secretly. On the other hand, the professor controverts this one also by illustrating that it was not possible the submarines to move and change the direction silently and that much fast at the time, since that technologies isn't still developed.
