The author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the effects of the salvage logging. While the reading part lists some factors as the advantages of this action, the professor counters on these specific points and she presents clues to call into the question for them.
First of all, the lecturer refutes the fact of area enhancement for the new trees. As it mentions in the text the decomposition of trees require a long duration, so, this action prepares the place for a short period. However, the professor states that the cleaning up does not provide the suitable condition for the new trees since the soil is not enriched by the nutrient. As she asserts the decomposition of old trees acquires the sufficient source for the growth of new trees.
Next, the passage points to the existence of decaying trees will lead to the increment of the spruce bark beetles which are dangerous for the forest. Meanwhile, the lecturer asserts that this type of insect has been living in this area for a long period and it does illustrate no any threat to the forest in this span. Moreover, based on the professor opinion, the decaying trees are suitable habitat not only for the bark beetle but also for the other types of birds and animals, which their existences have a fundamental and vital role in the sustainability of the forest ecosystem.
Finally, the lecturer argues the fact of financial benefits from the salvage logging, which in the text is nominated as one of the positive points; because, it provides the raw material for the factories; in addition, it furnishes employment opportunities for the local residents. Based on the lecturer affirmation, this action provides a small amount of the income for the industries and factories; inasmuch as, the transition of these trees are too expensive. Moreover, it does not last for a long span. About the job chances for the local dwellers, as she declares the industries ask the experts to hold this duty instead of the local people; besides, even in case which the local residents have this job it is temporary and it does not have a solid or fix salary forever.¬
