Both of the reading and lecture are about the navigation of humpback whales which migrate a long distance. The reading provides three reasons that these mentioned whales navigate by the stars and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all of arguments dubious and unconvincing.

First of all, the author of reading declares that since humpback whales’ brain has a complexity and cognitive ability; hence, they have been introduced as the most intelligent animals in the world and these whales are able to peruse some stimuli such as stars for orientation. This point is challenged by the professor. He points out that navigation by starts has been observed by some other birds like a duck. Based on a done research, a duck includes an average intelligence; consequently, navigation by stars and being clever are not related to each other.

Secondly, the article contends that migration of animals in the straight line requires animals to use some external forces to stay in a direct route. Since humpback whales fail to rely on land features unlike birds, they prefer to employ stars for this goal; in the contrast, the lecturer offers that one of the most important of external forces is magnetic field and researchers could have found a sensor in humpback whales' body which is called bio magnetic; therefore, this sensor can assist the whales to migrate easily and using stars will not be necessary.

Finally, the reading passage states that a marvelous behavior which is known as spy-hopping has been observed in the humpback whales. In spy-hopping, the whales usually watch the sky and bring out their head from water every few minutes, so they may search for stars. This argument is rebutted by the professor again and he expresses that this behavior is discovered in other animals like sharks. As we all know, sharks do not migrate and this activity is applied for finding prey by sharks. Besides, humpback whales usually use spy-hopping during day instead of night.
