The theories of extinnction of sea cow which lived in the Berling Island is discussing. The passage provides three possible reasons as the main causes of this extinction, however these reasons are rejected by the professor one by one.
First of all, the passage suggests that sea cows could have been died out by overhunting. In fact, native people who were living in Seberia hunted a lot of them to provide themthelves foods. However, the professor rebuts this idea by saying that sea cow was a big animal with 9 meter long and 10 tones weight. Therefore, the small population of native people were not able to hunt numerous of them, because by just hunting one of these animals, they have food for months.
Secondly, the reading states that some environmental changes let to such a extinction. Actually, the changing climate reduce the growth ot the kelp, which was the main foof source of sea cow. Nevertheless, the lecturer does not advocate this reason too. He mentions that, if there were any disturbance in the climate, other animals and plant would have been negatively impacted. However, there is no report in the declining of the whales population, and therefore, the climate change is not a convincing reason.
Finally, the author asserts that the European fur traders reduced the number of this animal. These people, who were equiped with weapones, hunted them for their valuable furs. On the contrary, the professor disagrees with this idea, becaus the sea cow's population were dicreasing before the entrance of European individuals. So, there should be an another reason for this happening.
