Reading and listening about bears.
The article talks about the aggressive nature of bears towards humans and also explains the ways in which an individual can protect themselves when they are attacked by bears. Whereas, the audio casts doubt on the nature of bears and also reveals the misconceptions of protecting oneself when attacked by a bear.
First, the article claims that bears are naturally aggressive towards humans. When bears live in close proximity to humans and fed by humans, they do not fear humans. Instead they consider humans to be their food source and attack them. The lecturer casts doubt by stating an example where 7000 people coexisted peacefully with 21 bears in just 7 square miles. These bears were hand fed by the community and there were no attacks.
Second, the article states that bears show aggression by standing on their hind legs or by growling, huffing and sometimes even slapping the ground. The lecturer invalidates this statement by saying that bears stand on their hind legs to get a better view. Bears growl and huff to establish their dominance and to avoid a fight. The lecturer asserts that bears are not naturally aggressive.
Third, the article put forward ways to escape a bear attack while the lecture puts forth different ways to deal with an attack. The article says that when a bear attacks, we must run as fast as we can and climb a tree. But, the lecturer says that running will only provoke the bear even more to attack and bears can run as fast as racehorses and climb trees easily with their large claws. He suggests that it is best to talk to the bear and hold your hands high above you and then slowly back away. If the bear charges towards you, cover your head and neck and play dead. The article says that if all fails, use a gun and shoot the bear several times while the lecturer says that bears attack people when shot and it is better to use a non lethal pepper spray.
Therefore, the lecture clearly disagrees with the misconceptions stated in the reading passage.
