The following appeared in a report presented for discussion at a meeting of the directors of a company that manufactures parts for heavy machinery:

"The falling revenues that the company is experiencing coincide with delays in manufacturing. These delays, in turn, are due in large part to poor planning in purchasing metals. Consider further that the manager of the department that handles purchasing of raw materials has an excellent background in general business, psychology, and sociology, but knows little about the properties of metals. The company should, therefore, move the purchasing manager to the sales department and bring in a scientist from the research division to be manager of the purchasing department."

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion ou com also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument wold make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.

In a discussion meeting of directors of a company that manufactures parts of heavy machinery, a report was presented which states that the company should move the current purchasing manager to sales department. The conclusion is based on the premise that the current purchasing manager has little knowledge of metals causing delay in manufacturing which in turn might be the reason of falling revenues. There are a few key factors which could call a conclusion to a question. The relies on several assumption on which there is no clear evidences. Hence the argument is unconvincing and several flaws.

Firstly, the argument states that the company is experiencing the falling in revenue is because of delay in manufacturing. Here the author fails to mention other factors affecting company’s revenue like increasing number of competitors or drop down of number of sales or there could be plenty of such reasons of falling of revenue. Hence there’s no clear evidence of this assumption.

Secondly, author of the argument mentions that poor planning of purchasing of metals is causing delay in manufacturing. This assumption is unsupported and evidence is unclear as co relation between purchasing of metal and manufacturing is not stated. Also delay in manufacturing can cause due to production inefficiency. The argument should provide more details about the delay in manufacturing.

Furthermore, moving purchase manager to the sales department may not be the best decision as he might not perform well in that department. And as purchase manager should have knowledge of general business management, project management psychology etc a scientist from research division would not be the good choice for purchasing manager.

Based on the facts I mentioned above I am not convinced that delay in manufacturing is causing the falling of revenue. The argument is weak and to make argument strong the author should provide clear statistical evidences of falling the revenue of company. Also author should provide link between poor planning of purchasing and delay in manufacturing. Without these evidences the argument is unsubstantiated
