Most medical doctors want to work in cities where they will make a lot of money. Yet in many rural areas there are not enough doctors. What are the reasons for this problem? How can it be solved?
Rising trend of urbanization has tremendous impacts on the uneven distribution of population and other required basic amenities. Medical sector did not remained untouched from this ongoing trend. Higher population density in cities generates more customer base and, eventually, increase revenue for medical profession. In lure of higher money, post completion of education, nobody would like to look towards rural area and end up settling in cities.
On the one hand, rural areas are primarily dependent on agriculture. Majority of land is used for crops and small amount is consumed for living. It leads to lower population density in these areas. Moreover, lack of industries and employment opportunities limits income of inhabitants. Lower incomes and lesser inhabitants, puts constraints on fee charged by the doctors and limits the number of clients respectively.
On the other hand, medical study is one of the costlier studies in the world. Abundance of funds are invested by doctors in order to achieve the qualification. As on human psychology, people spend their time, efforts and money to fulfill their dreams of luxurious lifestyle and safeguard their retirement life. These dreams are difficult to achieve by operating in the rural area.
But, this cannot be a never-ending phenomenon. It requires attention from the governments to make rural area equally attractive places to live in. There are variety of steps such as increasing disposable income of rural population, bringing in basic amenities into villages, reducing cost of medical courses and many more. Equally important, people must be taught about human values from their student life. Moral values and human values should be places above money and service to the nation and people should be rewarded with adequate incentives.
In the end, urbanization is becoming a problem which requires urgent resolution to achieve sustainable development.
