Burning coal in power plants produces a waste product called coal ash, a material that contains small amounts of potentially harmful chemicals. Environmentalists in the United States are concerned about the damage such harmful chemicals may be doing to the environment and suggest that the United States government should create new, much stricter regulations for handling and storing coal ash.

The passage states that the companies are disagree with the environmentalists concerns which are about the potential damage of coal ash, which is a material containg small amounts of likely harmful chemicals. In the lecture, all three statements of the representatives of power companies are discused and rejected. In the first argument, lecture states that many of the liners of the companies are old and insufficient; they may not function as well and may cause serious damges. For example several years ago coal ash was licked from a liner to the drinking water and caused many problems. Secondly, it states that the companies statement about concerns of the costumers is not reliable. If people are aware from the harm, they will reject it and agree to use the recycled products. As an example it mentions recylcling mercury which is accepted by people because it is less harmful. At last, it states that although the strict will increase the electric bill of the public, but it is about only one percent and it is little cost to pay for the environment. For conclusion, the lecture states that the government should create new, much stricter regulations for handling and storing coal ash which also will be accepted by people.
