TPO No.33

there are some several theories about the porpuse of carved stones found in Scotland. The author provides three possible theories for their use, however the professor in the lecture rejects all of them one by one.

First of all, the passage points out that these stones may have been used as weapones. In fact, because of the holes in them, they could be held on the end of a cord, and served as a weapon. On the other hand, the professer rejects this idea by stating that, these stones are preserved well and none of them are damaged. But, other weapons from same era such as arrows are damaged, and so if stones were used as weapons, they should have been harmed too.

Secondly, the reading suggests that these stones could have ben used as a simple weighing tool. That is becaus most of them are about 70 mm in diameter and so could be used to distribute food or grain between the population. However, the professor rebuts this assumption too. She states that, despite the similar size, they are not from same stone, and thus, their weights and densities are different. So, they are not prone to be utilitarian in measurement.

Finally, the writer asserts that carved stones were used as social indicators. Actually, they are elaborate enough to show people status in the society. Nevertheless, the lecturer deos not see this idea convincing. That is because some of the stones are completely simple an are not likely to show a status. In addition, in that era, when the owner of these stuff died, his indicators were buried with him. But, these stones were not found in the tombs or graves, and probably are were not used to indicate the status.
