Education
Criminology is a multidisciplinary degree, with students taking courses in psychology, sociology, public health, statistics, epidemiology, law and neuroscience. The focus is on theories of crime, factors influencing crime, history of crime and control and prevention programs. Criminal psychologists take courses mostly within the psychology department, focusing on how to interpret psychological tests and theories using criminal population norms. Accredited psychology programs require supervised field work, giving students a chance to evaluate and diagnose criminals. Most states require psychologists to earn a doctoral degree in psychology.
Licensing
Criminologists don't see patients in therapy, so they don't need a license. Clinical criminal psychologists, on the other hand, need a license to see patients. To get your license, you usually have to complete supervised, postdoctoral clinical work, pass a licensing examination, pass an ethics test and have no criminal record. Licensing requirements vary by state. To get licensed in Minnesota, for example, you must have 2,000 hours of postdoctoral supervised clinical work. After passing a national licensing exam and a ethics test, you can ask the board of psychology to allow you to practice.
Careers
Criminologists with an undergraduate degree usually work as probation officers, prison guards and criminal investigators. Many of those with a postgraduate degree become authors, lecturers, researchers, college professors and consultants. Criminal psychologists who want to see patients typically get a clinically-focused Doctor of Psychology Degree, or Psy.D. They might work in a number of different settings, including private practice, corrections offices and law enforcement agencies. They conduct court-ordered psychological assessments and court-ordered psychotherapy on criminals. Non-clinical criminal psychologists tend to work as researchers in universities and for the government, or as consultants for law enforcement agencies.
