The pie charts below show the share of Oscar winners by film genre for 2003 and 2008.
The pie charts illustrate the changes in the proportions of Oscar winners for seven different film genres in 2003 and 2008.
There were a number of differences among those genres and there was a similarity of the proportions between 2003 and 2008, that was Comedy.
As can be seen, the proportion of films changed for all the genres but it did not for Thriller films. Firstly, the percentage of Action and Thriller films that won Oscar changed significantly, going down from about half of the total to one-third in 2008, in contrast, Action film proportion increased from about 20% in 2003 to approximately a quarter in 2008.
The other differences were Science fiction, Romance, Documentary and Horror. All those genre films grew in 2008 but Horror films, Science fiction and Documentary rose to almost 20% in 2008. For Romance films, the proportion went up to about 15% in 2008.
To conclude, many more Action, Science fiction, Romance and Documentary films gained Oscar in 2008 than in 2003. Thriller and Horror films, however, decreased in 2008. The percentage of Comedy maintained the same level in 2003 and 2008
