The bar chart and table below give information about population figures in Japan.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart and table provide information regarding how the number of Japanese citizens and the proportion of those over 65 are expected to change from 1950 to 2055.

Overall, it is projected that the general population in Japan has a downward trend over the period given. Meanwhile, the quality of the elderly is estimated to account for a larger proportion compared to the past.

According to the information, the number of Japanese people in 1950 was recorded as just over 84 million and there was only 4,9 percent of the aging population. Those were both the lowest levels compared to the figures in 2005 and future predictions. In 2005, the number of people living in Japan rose significantly and peaked at 1278 million, while the percentage of older people increased by 15,1 percent.

On the other hand, it is expected that the total population will decrease considerably during the next 50 years and reach a little below 90 million in 2055. Despite this fall, the quality of people aged 65 and older will still go up dramatically. It is illustrated that there will be 36,5 million (41 percent) of Japanese people will be over 65 predicted in 2055.
