The chart and table below give information about population figures in Japan.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart illustrates the total population, while the table demonstrates the figures for the elderly population in Japan from 1950 to 2055.

Overall, Japan's population rose significantly, however, if the prediction is correct, the figure for the population in Japan will decline. Meanwhile, the number of old people increased significantly and is expected to continue to grow.

Looking at the bar chart, the population in Japan soared from 84.1 million to over 100 million in 1970. Afterward, it kept growing and reached its peak at 127.8 million in 2010 before reducing by approximately 2 million in 2015. In the next 40 years, Japan's population is predicted to plummet to about 90 million, almost equalling the number in 1955.

Turning to the table, although the proportion of people who are 65 years old or older was only 4.1 million, it climbed by over 20 million in 55 years. The elderly population is forecasted to be 37.2 million in 2035 but will drop to 36.5 million by 2055. By contrast, the rate of people who falls into the 65 or over age group has shown an upward trend without a sign of decrease.
