The bar graph illustrates the proportion of families living in rented and owned accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Overall, there was an inverse relationship between the percentage of homeowners and those who rented houses during this period. As the proportion of households owned increased, the percentage of rented accommodation saw a steady decline.

At the beginning of the 93-year period, a significant portion (more than 75%) of families lived in rented apartments. However, as the year advanced, this percentage declined steadily until 1971 when half of the populace had their own house and half were in rented apartments. This declined further to the least proportion in 2001 before ending at roughly 35% in 2011.

For owned accommodation, the percentage was the least in 1918. This increased steadily surpassing the proportion of those renting houses in 1981 at 60%. The percentage share peaked in 2001 at almost 70% of households living in an owned house before declining to about 65% 10 years later in 2011.
