The given chart illustrates the households owning and renting accommodation in England and Whales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, the percentage of people buying house experienced upward trend and renting showed downward trend. While, both of them fluctuated at the end of the period. Although, the number of people owning house made up the lowest segment of the chart at starting point, it outraced the percentage of people renting house.
In 1918, about 23% of households was owned by people. It increased to nearly 31% in 1939 and remained constant for fourteen year period of time. After that, it rose dramatically throughout the year to reach just below 70% in 2001 and again dropped to approximately 34% in 2011.
However, the percentage of house rented by people was about the triple of people owning accommodation at the beginning of the period. Which is then started to fall gradually in the following period of time and hitted the low point of almost 31% in 2001. It experienced slight growth in 10 years, which was around 35%.
