The diagram illustrates the process to turn seawater into drinkable one by removing salt.
As can be seen in the diagram, in the first step, saltwater is pulled from the sea to the pre-treatment filter to remove large objects before it goes through the membrane under high pressure. At this point, the membrane helps to separate water molecules from impurities and salt to make it purified. After that, the purified water is transported to the next stage while the waste from the pre-treatment process and seawater concentrated after the membrane filtering are returned to the sea.
At the next stage of the process, the purified water goes through the post-treatment process in which several chemicals such as lime, chlorine, and fluoride are added to make it drinkable. Then, it will be stored in a big tank before it is distrusted through the water supply system.
Clearly, the process of turning seawater into drinkable water consists of three treatments.
